First freeze of the season. Football weather, breath visible, frost on the grass. And somewhere, ice was plotting.

Ice Dam is a hulking monster along a neighbor’s eaves, grinning through icicle teeth. But he isn’t born from weather — he’s fed from below, by warm air leaking out of a thin attic.

The homeowner grabbed an ice pick. The Anchor caught his arm mid-swing: put the pick down, you’d only wound your roof. The Tamers fought the cause instead — insulation in, airflow balanced, ice and water shield along the eaves.

By the next sunny morning, Ice Dam was melting harmlessly into the gutters. He picked the wrong house.

Captain’s Notes
- Ice dams start inside. Warm air leaking through a thin attic melts snow, which refreezes at the cold eaves.
- Seal the leaks, insulate, ventilate. Then ice and water shield at the eaves as the final line of defense.
- Never chop the ice. The shingles lose that fight every time.
