Wood vs. Vinyl Fences in North Carolina: The Honest Comparison

Real wood fence installed by MCSquared Roofing in North Carolina

If you’re shopping for a privacy fence in North Carolina, you’re almost certainly comparing two materials: wood and vinyl. We install both, so this isn’t a sales pitch – it’s the honest breakdown we give homeowners on every estimate call, minus the fluff.

The Short Answer

Wood costs less up front and handles NC storms better. Vinyl costs more up front and asks less of you on maintenance, but our humidity and UV age it faster than the brochures admit. Neither is a bad choice – the right one depends on which trade-offs you’d rather live with.

Cost: What Each Fence Actually Runs in NC

Here’s our real 2026 pricing for a typical 6-foot privacy fence, per linear foot, installed:

Fence typePer linear foot (installed)150-ft yard example
Wood privacy (pressure-treated or cedar)$28 – $38$4,200 – $5,700
Vinyl privacy$32 – $42$4,800 – $6,300
Gates (either material)walk gate $400-600 / drive gate $900-1,500–

Wood usually wins on day-one price by $600-900 on a standard yard. Vinyl closes some of that gap over its life because you never pay to stain it – but only if your wood fence would have been neglected, and only if the vinyl survives our storm seasons without panel replacements. More on that in a second.

Maintenance: What NC Weather Does to Each One

Wood

Wood asks for a stain or seal every 2-3 years in our humidity. Skip it and the sun grays the boards and moisture starts the slow rot-and-warp cycle. The good news: maintenance is cheap, forgiving, and a neglected wood fence can usually be revived instead of replaced – sand it, stain it, swap a few pickets, done.

Vinyl

Vinyl’s pitch is “zero maintenance,” and up close that’s mostly true – no staining, no rot, no termites. What the pitch skips is North Carolina specifically. Our humidity grows mildew and algae on the panels, so you’ll be pressure washing a fence you were told to ignore. And our UV doesn’t bleach vinyl; it makes it brittle over years, so a decade-old panel handles impact differently than a new one.

Storms: The Part the Brochures Really Skip

We’ve written a whole guide to the best fences for NC storms, but here’s the short version. When a big front rolls through the Piedmont:

Wood takes the hit and keeps standing. It flexes, it loses a picket or two at worst, and repairs are cheap and obvious. A shadow-box wood design (boards staggered with gaps) lets wind pass through instead of pushing on a solid wall.

Vinyl tends to look perfect right up until it doesn’t. Panels pop off rails, and after years of UV the boards crack instead of bending. The failure mode is bigger and the replacement panels cost real money.

If storm survival is your top priority, wood wins between these two – and aluminum wins overall if privacy isn’t the goal.

How Long Each One Lasts

Honest numbers for North Carolina: a maintained wood privacy fence runs 15-20+ years. Vinyl is advertised at 20-30, and in milder climates that’s fair – but mildew washes and UV embrittlement mean real-world life in the Piedmont often lands at the short end of that range unless you maintain it too, just differently.

Looks, HOAs, and Resale

Vinyl gives you that clean white look permanently – if your HOA requires a uniform white fence, the decision is basically made for you. Wood gives you the warm, natural look most NC neighborhoods actually have, and stain colors let you match the house. Both fence types add value; neither one magically pays for itself. Get the fence you’ll want to look at, because you’ll look at it every day for 20 years.

So Which Should You Pick?

Choose wood privacy if: you want the lower up-front price, you’re okay staining it every couple of years, or you’d rather your fence shrug off storms with small repairs instead of panel replacements. This is what most of our NC customers choose, and it’s what we’d put in our own yards.

Choose vinyl if: you’re committed to the white look (or your HOA is), you truly won’t maintain anything, and your yard is sheltered from the worst wind.
